Cheftrainer an der Hinksey Sculling School in Oxford
Hinksey Sculling School – Head Coach
The Hinksey Sculling School seeks to appoint a new full-time Head Coach for the 2020/21 season.
Based in Oxford, HSS is a charitable community rowing club with a unique focus on professionally coached junior rowing. While very much a grassroots programme with a can-do attitude in nature, HSS pursues high ambitions, with a pool of over 100 junior rowers training across all age groups, including a rapidly expanding & highly competitive J16-18 squad. The core of our athletes comes from local state schools who otherwise would not be able to access a sport like rowing.
Our charity has built a reputation for its innovative development work with young people of all backgrounds. We believe that rowing can be a powerful force for good in a young person’s life and since rowing’s life benefits tend to be most pronounced in successful rowers, we aim to give each of our athletes the opportunity and support to become competitive at the highest level. Relaxed recreational rowing with a strong focus on single sculling and skill development is also fostered at HSS, particularly in the younger age groups.
Our ideal candidate would be a coach with an unbridled passion for the sport and a strong track record of building a competitive and supportive team culture. Proven ability to develop crews to a standard of national or international success is essential, with a strong emphasis on the personal development of each and every athlete in their care. Recently retired elite athletes, even without formal coaching qualification, are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will take charge of coaching our senior boys’ squad (J16-18). The new Head Coach will be in the enviable position to inherit a vibrant group of extraordinarily committed and capable athletes who have been training together for the last two years and put themselves in contention for stand-out performances at national championships, GB trials and Henley Royal Regatta.
Working closely together with the Director of Rowing, the Head Coach helps set out the overall coaching and training strategy for the entire programme, takes charge of the ‘on the ground’ operations and related administrative work, and supports the career development of our assistant coaches.
This position presents a great opportunity for the successful applicant. They will be given the chance to take on a high degree of responsibility within a supportive environment of trustees and the Director of Rowing. The Head Coach will be given freedom to make their mark on the future of the club in an exciting chapter of its development.
